Make the Connection

Connecting high schools to postsecondary institutions requires developing common college-ready standards that clearly define what entering freshmen must know – especially in mathematics, writing and reading – to enter in credit-bearing courses and get on track toward timely graduation. These standards must then be translated into policies for K-12 education, such as high school graduation requirements, tests and accountability indicators. They must also be translated into postsecondary policies and practices, such as those affecting course placement, articulation and transfer, and the quality and rigor of first year courses.
